An attempt on Alexander's life

October 12, 1920

Prince Regent Alexander of Serbia was the target of an assassination attempt during a recent trip to Sarajevo, according to the New York Times.  The report is based on a dispatch from the Montenegrin Free Press Bureau, which stated:  "A bomb was thrown under the train in which the Prince Regent of Serbia was returning from Sarajevo.  Two coaches were wrecked, but the Prince was unhurt. An inquiry gave no results. The Mayor and the Municipal Council of Sarajevo have resigned."
Sarajevo is the capital of Bosnia.  On June 28, 1914, Archduke Franz Ferdinand, heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne, and his morganatic wife, the Duchess of Hohenberg, were assassinated by Gavrio Princip, a member of the Black Hand.
This assassination is regarded as the "direct cause of diplomatic exchanges among the powers" which led to the great war.
